Item #205626 The Counterpane Fairy. Katharine Pyle.

The Counterpane Fairy.

E. P. Dutton, 1898. First edition, first printing. Green cloth, decoratively gilt. Small ink name and small bookseller's label, minor rubbing to joints and spine tips, overall near fine and bright in custom mylar cover. Item #205626

Katharine was the sister of Golden Age illustrator Howard Pyle and part of the school of American women illustrators that arose at that time. In 1888 she co-authored The Wonder Clock with her brother and in 1899 she authored and illustrated The Counterpane Fairy, her first solo work. In it, a little boy named Teddy, suffering from a lengthy illness is visited by a Counterpane Fairy. She proceeds to show him ten fairy tales associated with different colored squares on his counterpane (i.e. quilt). A fascinating and remarkably engaging story to spark any child's imagination. .
