Scottish author J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan first appeared as a play in 1904 and was adapted into a novel in 1911. Barrie lived near London’s first children’s hospital and took Peter Pan’s eternal youthfulness to heart by unexpectedly granting the copyright and royalties for all things Peter Pan to London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in 1929, where the gift still benefits patients today.
Two years after Barrie’s death in 1937, artist, etcher, and cartoonist Edmund Blampied was commissioned to illustrate the children’s classic for a new edition to come out at Christmas. Beautifully rebound in quarter blue Morocco and retaining Blampied’s original illustrated endpapers along with 29 color and black-and-white plates, Blampied's vision of Neverland continues to inspire generations of readers still young at heart.
