Author Phillip Schuler was the war correspondent for the Australian newspaper The Age, where his father was editor, in the early years of World War I. Drawing from his personal experience and interactions with the soldiers, as well as official reports, Schuler puts together an extensive account of Australia in arms, including the Gallipoli Campaign.
In pencil on the ffep is Audrey Chirnside's signature, possibly the same Miss Audrey Chirnside who drove ambulances during the war effort, as mentioned in the Evening Post, Volume LXXXVIII, Issue 157, 31 December 1914, Page 9. According to the article, "She is probably the first woman, and certainly the first young girl, who has been appointed to such a position, and her example is naturally firing other girls who handle motor-cars skilfully [sic] to go and do likewise."
