The veracity of these memoirs came under the scrutiny of the Press, and was forcefully defended in the Editor's Preface in Volume Three. Caroline was popular with the public, and they were sympathetic to Caroline's plight, especially after the scandalous trial for adultery known as The Queen Caroline Affair. The Diaries were something of a bestseller, an early 19th Century expose of life in the Court of George IV.
