House of Flowers began as a lyrical short story set in a folkloric Haiti, its plot propelled by love, jealousy, and improbable deliverance. First published in 1950 and later adapted into Capote’s only Broadway musical with composer Harold Arlen (1954), it reappeared in print as one of the three stories in the 1958 Random House Breakfast at Tiffany’s collection—thereby entering the permanent core of Capote’s mid-century work. The 1968 Random House first edition of the musical script captures the unique blend of Capote’s narrative whimsy and theatrical daring—an essential bloom in his literary garden.
