Considered an enduring classic in the literature of Natural History, Travel and Exploration, The Naturalist on the Rivers Amazon, originally published in 1863 in two volumes, was so well-received that an abridged single volume edition was immediately issued for the general public and went into multiple subsequent printings. This 1892 second edition restores the full text with additional material, including a double-page color illustration of "Mimicry Between Butterflies", reproduced from a Linnean Society publication. After persistent health issues, Bates died in the same year of this edition. This copy is signed and dated in the year of publication on the half-title page by T.J. Cobden-Sanderson of Dove's Press and Bindery fame. Additionally signed by important American ornithologist and naturalist Francis R. Cope Jr., dated 1938.
Clodd's 72-page memoir provides extensive background and introduces letters from Sir Joseph Hooker and Francis Darwin, and correspondence between Bates and Charles Darwin.
