Oliver Goldsmith was a prominent naturalist, writer, and physician whose keen observations of the natural world contributed significantly to the fields of natural history and literature. His works, such as The Citizen of the World and The History of the Earth and Animated Nature, blend scientific inquiry with poetic prose, making complex ideas accessible to a broader audience. Goldsmith's ability to articulate the beauty and intricacies of nature not only inspired educated readers but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the environment. His influence persists in the way naturalists and writers intertwine storytelling with scientific exploration, inspiring future generations to observe and cherish the world around them.

Originally published in 1774, Goldsmith's Animated Nature was included in Thomas Jefferson's library and part of the collection he eventually sold to the Library of Congress in 1815.
