Translated from the Chinese by Howard Goldblatt. Originally published under the title Jiu Guo in 1992 by the Hung-fan Book Company in Taiwan.
"Mo Yan" is the pen name for Chinese author Guan Moye, inspired by his parents' continual warning - "don't speak" - during his childhood in 1950's politically-charged China. In 2012, Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize of Literature. Republic of Wine, his fifth novel, is a satire addressing government corruption using food, alcohol, and cannibalism as metaphors for excess and self-destruction.
Signed by author Mo Yan on the half-title page and translator Goldblatt on the title page.
