A reviewer for Time Magazine remarked that Tuff read "like an extended rap song, its characters recounting struggle and survival with the bravado of hip-hoppers."

Beatty would go on to win the Booker Prize as well as the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2016 for his later novel The Sellout. This made him the first writer from from the United States to be honored with the Booker Prize.
