JAPANESE FAIRY TALES IN THE GOLDEN AGE OF ILLUSTRATION

This collection of 38 tales presents the classic folklore of Japan––from Momotaro and Urashima to The Moon Maiden––filtered through the sensibilities of British-born, Tokyo-raised Grace James. James, daughter of a British Naval officer, recounts many of these tales from memory, "being relics of childish days, originally heard from the lips of a schoolfellow or a nurse." A landmark of Japonisme in children's literature, James bolsters these retellings with the source traditions of Kojiki alongside the full-color ethereal illustrations of golden-age illustrator Warwick Goble. While originally published in 1910, this 1912 “New Edition” includes 16 of Goble’s plates and is handsomely bound in blue cloth, unusually well preserved in its scarce original dust jacket.
