He lived in Austria during the 1950s, covering the Soviet Union's invasion into Hungary for Reader's Digest. Michener composited interviews from the Hungarian refugees he met into this nonfiction account of writers germinating the ideas of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and everyday people executing the revolt, all desperate to cross the bridge of Andau and escape the horrors of living under the Soviets.
