UNKNOWN NEWBERRY

1932 Newberry winner, Laura Adams Armer (1874-1963), did not know the award existed before she received it for Waterless Mountain. Because she was so immersed in Navajo life and culture, which she discovered while on a family vacation to a Navajo Reservation in Arizona, awareness of the Newberry passed her over. She spent years living among the tribe, earning their respect, and ultimately writing and illustrating Waterless Mountain with her husband. Told through the eyes of a young Navajo boy, Armer introduced broader American audiences to the legends, mysticism, and deep connection to nature and land the Navajo have.

This first edition features gorgeous illustrations and a dust jacket that presents extremely well.
