NINETEENTH-CENTURY ART PIONEER
James Jackson Jarves (1818-1888) was an American art collector who lived in Italy and brought early Italian Renaissance art collecting to the United States. Yale accepted his collection as collateral for a loan, which he eventually defaulted on, and the university purchased 119 Italian paintings created between the tenth and seventeenth centuries. Already a pioneer in the art collecting world, Jarves was also one of the first writers to engage critically with Japanese art, exploring the history, mythological foundations, and relationship Japanese artists have to their art.
This copy is internally clean and in a later issue publisher's green cloth with Japanese art stamped.
