SHELLEY CONTEXTUALIZED
Anna Benneson McMahan joined a Friends in Council study group in Illinois in 1869, and her life of writing and lecturing exploded from there. Highly educated at a women's university, McMahan taught literature to adults in nearby towns, eventually authoring The Study Guide, a Guide for the Student of English Literature to provide access to literary learning for women. She spent most of her career compiling letters and stories from English literary figures. Inspired by a trip to Rome and her love of antiquities, McMahan authored several texts about Italy's influence on English authors, including Lord Byron and Percy Shelley.
