LOVE: A WALK BETWEEN DARK AND DARK

Robert Graves' life was spotted with relational turmoil as he suffered from "shell shock" after serving in WWI. Bisexual and continuously seeking his next muse, he struggled in his marriages, engaging in a love triangle with his wife, Nancy Nicholson, and poet, Laura Riding. Graves eventually left both women and married Beryl Hodge, whom he loved until his death despite pursuing young muses.

This poetry collection, No More Ghosts, reveals his turbulent wrestling with marriage and masculinity, all highlighted in his stark and devastating voice, as he threaded the needle between personal romantic fulfillment and the darkness that continually crept into his life:

"Take your delight in momentariness,
Walk between dark and dark--a shining space
With the grave's narrowness, thought not its peace."
