ILLUSTRATED APPALACHIAN FOLKLORE
Marie Campbell (1907-1980) discovered Appalachian folklore after moving to Kentucky to take a teaching position. Quickly entranced by the rich oral tradition that defined the mountains' storytelling, Campbell pursued the tales, publishing stories from southern Appalachia in journals and several collections. Tales from the Cloud Walking Country is the culmination of Campbell's life work, published after receiving her PhD in folklore and comparative literature. Including tales from six distinct and renowned storytellers, its lore ranges from local tales to European classics, like Cinderella, with an Appalachian twist. Fittingly paired with Clare Leighton's wood engravings, both the text and illustrations capture a rural American imagination that is often forgotten. So, lose your head in the clouds with these Appalachian folktales.
