THE SATIRICAL TRAVELOGUE

Rudyard Kipling, most well known for The Jungle Book, worked as a journalist for seven years in India and abhorred tourists, refusing to stoop to the standard travelogue writings. However, travel makes almost anyone a tourist, as evidenced in the American Notes, first published in 1891 by M. J. Ivers & Co. His satirical travelogue follows his wonder and exasperation as he landed in San Francisco and traveled east across the country. His American Notes are paired nicely with the grounding force of Letters of Marque, which explores his birth country India through the lens of a British explorer, originally published in 1891.

These collections of letters are first bound together by Lovell Company in the early twentieth century. This copy is charmingly inscribed "This comes from the library of my father, Eugene Fica, Eugene Fica II. Octo 1920."
