THE LAVENDER-BOUND BOOK
Myrtle Reed, American fiction and cookbook author, and Margaret Armstrong, one of the most successful book design artists of the early twentieth century, were a match made. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement, readers sought out physically beautiful books for their homes, and Margaret Armstrong's floral, Art Nouveau-inspired cover designs took off. Armstrong illustrated fourteen bindings for Reed, each covered in a signature purple cloth so lovers of Reed's dreamy, romantic historical fiction could have a charming matching set for their shelves. This lavender-bound copy of Reed's exploration of disability, Flower of the Dusk, follows neighboring families as Sylvia, physically disabled, and her blind father recover from the death of her mother and new romance buds.
