Written just two years apart, Notes from Underground (1864) and The Gambler (1866) are truly indispensable to Dostoyevsky's literary and philosophical vision. Though often overshadowed by the genius of his great novels, these two novellas bring darkest aspects of Dostoyevsky's imagination to the forefront, presenting physical, moral, and philosophical sickness that were prevalent both within Dostoyevsky's own life and the broader culture in which he found himself. Together they present two of literature's most penetrating studies of psychological and existential crisis.
This edition was issued by the Limited Editions Club just over 100 years after their original publication and is adorned with the equally haunting, monochromatic illustrations of Aleandre Alexeiff. Limited to 1500 numbered copies, signed by the Alexeieff, of which this copy is 1098.
