These are not fictional inventions, but the real-life ordeals endured by Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) between 1849 and 1859. They are also inspired his semi-autobiographical, darkly psychological, and unflinching masterpiece, The House of the Dead.
Fritz Eichenberg's ten full-page engravings brilliantly capture the bleak spirit of imperial Russia, drawing the reader into both the psychological and physical horrors endured by Dostoevsky's prisoners. This handsome Limited Editions Club edition was one of just 1,500 numbered copies signed by Eichenberg, of which this is copy no. 1096.
