BEFORE LOUISA WAS PAID TO WRITE

Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women, turned to her own experience as a young working woman for Work. Following Christie Devon as she leaves her aunt and uncle's home to support herself financially, Christie works many of the jobs Alcott held, hopping from cook to actress to governess to seamstress to nurse. An overtly feminist exploration of the American working class, Alcott's novel was met with mixed reviews upon its 1873 publication, the Worcester Evening Gazette calling the novel "one which women love, and men find mildly interesting, if no more."

Released about a decade after the first edition, this New and Cheaper Edition boasts bright illustrated cloth.
