CLEAR THE WAY FOR A SOBER NATION
American novelist Timothy Shay Arthur (1809-1885) rallied Americans around the temperance movement with the 1854 publication of his most popular novel, Ten Nights in a Bar-Room. Arthur's tale of a tavern-owner's rapidly disintegrating personal life paved the road to the 18th Amendment, with reprints like this whipping Americans into an anti-alcohol frenzy in the decades leading up to prohibition.
