Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869), a British physician, famously made lists to fend of his depression. After retiring from the medical field, Roget began compiling his lists of words into classifications, which eventually became the Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases (1852). This new edition was revised and enlarged by his son, John Lewis Roget, adding an index.
