MCCARTHY REACHES CRITICAL ACCLAIM

While he had already published five novels before starting his Border Trilogy, Cormac McCarthy was still fairly little known outside of literary circles. With the publication of All the Pretty Horses in 1992, McCarthy exceeded his acclaim and became a major public literary figure, winning both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Completed by The Crossing in 1994 and Cities of the Plain in 1998, together they represent not simply a high point in McCarthy’s fiction, but the sequence that brought one of America’s most singular novelists from cult reputation to national prominence.
