SEUSS' BIGGEST FAILURE AND THE SAP THAT PUBLISHED IT
Originally published in 1939, The Seven Lady Godivas was Seuss' third published book and his first attempt to reach adults with his whimsical storytelling. But it turned out to be an utter commercial failure, selling only roughly a fourth of the copies printed––and I think Seuss saw it coming. He had reservations and hinted at his feelings toward his publisher––Random House co-founder Bennett Cerf––in the book's endpapers, which include a bucket of sap hanging from a tree labeled "Bennett Cerf."
Following this failure, he turned his attention back to writing for children, and the Godivas faded into obscurity until renewed public curiosity prompted its reissue in 1987.
Presented here is a fine first edition example of that reissue.
